Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has a reputation for being one of the more innovative offensive coaches in the NFL.
Reid’s success can be credited to his willingness to think outside of the box, which is exactly what he did once when he was an offensive assistant coach with the Green Bay Packers, and he called a play given to him by the team’s janitor.
“We had a janitor — it was a mom and pop group that cleaned our facility forever — and this guy kept telling me…I’ve got this play for you,” Reid recalled during a recent appearance on the “Green Light with Chris Long” podcast. “He kept telling me this over and over. Finally, I said, ‘OK, here’s a card. Draw up the play.’ And he drew up the play and I go, ‘Dang, that’s pretty good.’ We called the play just before halftime and it scored, and he starts hitting his wife going, ‘That’s my play! That’s my play!’”
It's not known exactly when or which game Reid used the play in, but it occurred sometime between 1992 and 1998 when Reid worked for the Packers as an assistant offensive line and tight ends coach before being promoted to quarterbacks coach/assistant head coach.
Reid has incorporated his offensive imagination at both of his head coaching stops with the Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. Some of his more innovative plays can be seen below.

Reid's janitor story is just one example of his mantra of "We'll take plays from anywhere."
According to one X user, the 65-year-old head coach lived up to his M.O. when he borrowed a play that resulted in a score in a playoff game against his son's high school football team.
True story, I coached against his son when he was in high school. We were playing their team in the playoffs and we ran a double handoff for a TD, 2-3 weeks later im watching a Chiefs game and see the Chiefs run the exact same play. It was so damn cool to see.
