Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid gave a brief, yet worrying injury update about WR Xavier Worthy following the Week 1 loss against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Worthy suffered a shoulder injury on the third offensive play of the game , in a friendly-fire collision with Chiefs TE Travis Kelce. Worthy was seen in severe pain, tended to by the Chiefs' training staff on the sideline before he was escorted off the field with a towel over his head. Worthy was initially ruled questionable to return to the game before the team eventually ruled him out.

"(Xavier) Worthy hurt his shoulder right early in the game," Reid told reporters on Friday night. "Then, (Drue) Tranquill, (Nick) Bolton, and (Ashton) Gillotte, but they all finished, and they should be okay as we go forward."

His phrasing made it sound as if Tranquill, Bolton, and Gillotte would be OK, but Worthy wouldn't. The fear surrounding Worthy's injury is a potential shoulder dislocation, ranging in severity from a few weeks to a potential season-ending injury. Asked about the seriousness of Worthy's injury in a follow-up question, Reid struck a somber tone and said the team would know more soon.

"We'll know tomorrow, once we get back and get an MRI," he said.

The circumstances surrounding the injury were reminiscent of the collision between Patrick Mahomes and Rashee Rice in Week 4 against the Chargers just last season. A young second-year receiver full of promise, unintentionally taken out by friendly fire from a star player.

Chiefs' wide receiver depth already facing serious questions just one week into the 2025 NFL season

After Worthy left Week 1 with his shoulder injury, the Chiefs had just five available and healthy receivers to rely upon: Hollywood Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Tyquan Thornton, Nikko Remigio, and Jason Brownlee.

Patrick Mahomes praised the guys for stepping up, but admitted it took a minute for the group to get going. Brown led Chiefs receivers with 10 receptions on 16 targets and 99 receiving yards. Smith-Schuster was second with five receptions for 55 yards, and Thornton had two receptions on four targets for 41 yards. Brownlee saw one target and no receptions, and Remigio wasn't targeted at all.

Rashee Rice, of course, is suspended for the first six weeks to start the 2025 NFL season. Rookie WR Jalen Royals didn't make the trip to Brazil, as he deals with knee tendinitis. The team has one wide receiver, UDFA rookie Jimmy Holiday, on the practice squad. The depth of the group is already being tested just a few games into the season, which isn't too dissimilar to what they faced with injuries to Brown and Rice last season.
