Chiefs' Isiah Pacheco Scouts 'Phenomenal' Running Back Room

The Kansas City Chiefs' run game last season left a lot to be desired, ranking 26th for yards per game, but there were a couple of contributing factors.

Isiah Pacheco got injured in Week 2, leading the Chiefs to sign Kareem Hunt off the couch to headline the run game, and when Pacheco did return from his injury, he wasn't his usual self.

As such, the Chiefs this offseason went about adding some more elements to the run game, signing Elijah Mitchell to bring speed to the rushing attack, and rookie Brashard Smith, who brings speed and receiving ability to the group.

With training camp beginning for the Chiefs, how would Pacheco describe the group?

“Oh, it's phenomenal,” Pacheco said. “We got guys that you can't depend on as far as saying that they're only doing one thing. You can't just say that about us. You got guys just playing all different roles, having fun with it and just competing.”

So, there is going to be a different dynamic for the run game, which Patrick Mahomes hopes he'll be able to lean on a little more consistently in 2025...if the injury bug stays away.

For Pacheco, who missed nine games with injury last season, he's simply happy to be back at camp fully healthy.

"I'm feeling really good," Pacheco said. "Having fun with the guys. Excited to be back out here in this environment. It's a beautiful setting.”

Many doubt the Chiefs this upcoming season, but if the run game can improve, along with the offensive line, Kansas City, as many expect, will be among the challengers for the Super Bowl.

With a "phenomenal" run game potentially being the driving force.
