Chiefs Lose Key Offensive Player On First Drive

The opening drives of these first two NFL games have really been killer in terms of injuries. Yesterday the Philadelphia Eagles lost a key special teams player and member of their backfield and today the Chiefs saw one of their most important players on offense leave the game.

On just the third snap for the Chiefs on offense, Patrick Mahomes targeted wide receiver Xavier Worthy for a third-down pass. But Worthy intersected paths with tight end Travis Kelce and the two men collided, with Worthy falling to the ground.

Worthy hit his shoulder hard on the play and had to stay on the field for a few extra moments before walking off with his shoulder in clear pain. After being tended to by the media team, he made his way to the X-ray room with a towel over his head.

Since then, the Chiefs have listed Worthy as "OUT" for the remainder of the game.

A rough start

The Chiefs had a tough first quarter at Arena Corinthians in Brazil. The running game had no juice at all and Patrick Mahomes repeatedly overthrew or misplaced balls thrown to his wide receivers. By the end of the quarter the Chiefs trailed 7-0 and had mustered just a few dozen yards while the Chargers had close to 150 yards of offense. By the second quarter that deficit extended to 10-0.

Losing Worthy that early in the game certainly isn't going to make it any easier for the Chiefs to come back in this one. And if the injury turns out to be even worse than it looked, they could be in trouble.

The Chiefs are extra-thin at wide receiver with Rashee Rice out for the first six weeks on a suspension. Win or lose in Brazil, the Chiefs may need to make some tough decisions about their receiving corps in the days to come.
