Chiefs Make Decision After Losing Super Bowl Champion

The Kansas City Chiefs have spent the early weeks of the 2026 offseason improving their roster after a turbulent year that forced the organization to reassess several long-term decisions. While Kansas City remains built around quarterback Patrick Mahomes and one of the league’s most explosive offenses, the front office is making changes as it hopes to return as a contender in the AFC and compete for another Super Bowl.

One of the most significant moves came on the defensive side of the ball when the Chiefs decided to move on from standout cornerback Trent McDuffie. The former first-round pick had developed into one of the NFL’s premier defensive backs during his time in Kansas City, starting 56 regular-season games and appearing in 10 playoff games, winning two Super Bowls. During that stretch, McDuffie recorded 246 tackles, 5.5 sacks and three interceptions and established himself as a centerpiece of the Chiefs’ secondary.

However, the financial reality of maintaining a championship roster ultimately forced Kansas City’s hand. In March, the Chiefs traded McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams, who quickly signed him to a four-year, $124 million extension that made him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.  The move freed cap space for Kansas City but also left a significant void in the secondary.

Replacing a player of McDuffie’s caliber is no easy task, and the Chiefs have spent the early portion of free agency evaluating options that could help stabilize their defensive backfield. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has historically relied on versatile defensive backs who can rotate between outside and slot coverage.

On Thursday, Kansas City made its first move toward addressing that need. According to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, the Chiefs are signing former Miami Dolphins cornerback Kader Kohou.

Kohou, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent, missed the 2025 season with a knee injury, but has played in 47 games (38 starts) and his career stats include 190 tackles and three interceptions.

Kohou’s arrival gives Kansas City a player with significant starting experience. During his time with Miami, he quickly established himself as a dependable contributor in the Dolphins’ secondary, demonstrating the ability to play both outside corner and in the slot.

While his 2025 season was wiped out due to a knee injury, Kohou’s earlier production made him an attractive option for a Chiefs defense looking to replace key contributors following McDuffie’s departure.
