Chiefs Make Hall of Fame Announcement on Thursday
Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs made an expected but significant announcement Thursday, confirming that longtime linebacker Derrick Johnson will be inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame.

The franchise recognized Johnson as its all-time leading tackler and one of the most productive defensive players in team history. Selected No. 15 overall in the 2005 NFL Draft, Johnson spent 13 seasons in Kansas City and appeared in 182 games with 169 starts.

He played through multiple coaching changes and defensive systems, remaining an integral piece of the defensive unit for more than a decade. His career combined high-level production, durability, and consistent performance, making him one of the most accomplished defenders to wear a Chiefs uniform.

A Career Built on Elite Production

Johnson finished his Chiefs career with 1,151 tackles, the most in franchise history. He added 27.5 sacks, 14 interceptions, and 23 forced fumbles, impacting games in multiple ways. He recorded at least 90 tackles in eight different seasons and topped 100 tackles four times. His 2011 season stands out the most, when he posted 131 total tackles, nine pass deflections, two interceptions, and earned First-Team All-Pro honors.

Consistency Across 13 Seasons

From his rookie season in 2005 through 2017, Johnson was a regular starter and defensive leader. He started all 16 games in six different seasons and rarely left the field during his prime years.

Even after suffering a torn Achilles in 2014 and another in 2016, he returned to start 15 games in 2017 and recorded 71 tackles. He also played a key role in Kansas City’s playoff appearances, including the 2010 AFC West title team.

Accolades and Recognition

Johnson earned four Pro Bowl selections from 2011 to 2013 and again in 2015. He was named First-Team All-Pro in 2011 and Second-Team All-Pro in 2015. At the University of Texas, he was a unanimous All-American in 2004 and won the Dick Butkus Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, entering the NFL as one of the top linebacker prospects in his class.

Cementing a Chiefs Legacy

Johnson retired in 2019 after signing a one-day contract with Kansas City. He ranks among the franchise leaders in tackles, forced fumbles, and interceptions by a linebacker. His Hall of Fame induction formally places him among the most accomplished defensive players in Chiefs history.
