The Kansas City Chiefs took their first loss of the season on Sunday night against the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. Now 5-1, the Chiefs are still in first place in the AFC West and will now look to rebound in Week 8 against their divisional rival, the Denver Broncos.

While Kansas City has put together a well-rounded attack and a consistent start to the season, one of the few areas of concern has been the kicking game. In his 10th season with the Chiefs, kicker Harrison Butker is enduring the least accurate season of his career through seven games.

Butker has made 11 of his 16 field goal attempts this season, converting just 68.8% of his field-goal attempts, a career low. Butker has also missed an extra point this year. The struggles continued against the Seahawks, as the formerly reliable placekicker hit just one of his three field goal attempts. While Kansas City’s offense was not able to generate any meaningful production, Butker’s misses from 45 and 58 yards out stunted any possible momentum.

Throughout his career, Butker has been one of the most accurate kickers of his generation. He is currently fifth all-time in career field goal percentage, hitting 87.3% of his field goals. However, due to his recent struggles, Kansas City has begun exploring other options.

After the loss, Butker indicated that he is healthy, and he was simply trying to take things one attempt at a time, acknowledging that “there’s been some kicks that haven’t gone in.”

With Butker healthy but still struggling, the Chiefs are signing veteran kicker Justin Tucker to their practice squad, according to Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star.

While Butker has not lost his spot yet, the move gives the Chiefs an experienced option to turn to if they need it.

Tucker, a seven-time Pro Bowler, spent 13 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He is second all-time in field goal percentage, hitting 89.1% of his career field goals.

If Butker can return to his usual level of consistency, the Chiefs will have little reason to make changes. However, if the misses continue, they now have an experienced alternative in the building.
