Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has completed his 13th NFL season, but his future remains uncertain as retirement speculation continues to surround the veteran star. Kelce, now 36, finished his 2025 campaign with 76 receptions for 851 yards and five touchdowns in the regular season, earning his 11th consecutive Pro Bowl selection.

However, the year ended in disappointment as Kansas City finished 6–11 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Kelce’s contract expired at the conclusion of the season, leaving him without a deal for 2026 and free to decide whether to retire or continue playing.

Amid the speculation, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt addressed Kelce’s status during an appearance on Good Morning Football on Tuesday, noting that the organization is hopeful the veteran tight end will return.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that he can still play,” Clark said.

Kansas City’s desire to retain Kelce is rooted in his long-standing impact on the franchise. A three-time Super Bowl champion, Kelce has been one of the most productive tight ends in NFL history and a central figure in the Chiefs’ offensive success over the past decade. His chemistry with Patrick Mahomes, leadership in the locker room and consistent postseason production have helped define the most successful stretch in team history.

Kelce himself has addressed his future publicly, reiterating that he will not rush the decision. He has said he plans to rest and recover before determining whether he is physically and mentally prepared to commit to another NFL season, emphasizing that he would only return if he feels capable of playing at a high level.

The recent return of Eric Bieniemy as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator could also factor into Kelce’s decision. Kelce endorsed the move on “ The New Heights” podcast, calling Bieniemy “one of my favorite coaches of all time” and expressing excitement about his return to Kansas City.

The familiarity and continuity within the coaching staff may provide additional incentive as Kelce weighs whether to extend his career into a 14th season.
