Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy is entering his second season in the NFL. One “major” development could signal that a big season is coming for the former Texas Longhorns star. That development is his chemistry with Chiefs quarterback and two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes.
Worthy explained the improved connection during an appearance at a charity event.
“Just growing that chemistry with Pat early on. Not having to get real game experience, and now I have that game experience.” Worthy told reporters on June 14. “Just being able to have that is major.”
Worthy caught 59 passes for 638 yards and 6 touchdowns.
His campaign ranks fourth in catches, fifth in yards, and tied for third in touchdowns among rookie receivers in Chiefs franchise history, per Stathead.
Worthy’s comments come on the heels of recent remarks to Chiefs beat reporters about his level of comfort in the offense entering his second season.
The Chiefs selected Worthy with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
“The end of last year was kind of like a stepping stone for me,” Worthy told media members in May. “Just learning and kind of getting a better feel for what Pat likes. And I started feeling like that got better at the end of the year. So, just continue that and use that momentum.
“I understand the offense, I feel way more comfortable just being out there, I understand it. I don’t have to really think a lot, I just be on the fly.”

During his most recent comments, Worthy explained his personal development further.
“Definitely got stronger, little bigger, put on a little weight,” Worthy said. “Just looking forward to building that chemistry with Pat, like I said.”
Worthy had a 39-392-3 line over the final seven games of the regular season, boasting a catch rate over 70%, while the Chiefs rattled off a 6-1 run. Worthy made his mark in the postseason, too, catching 11 passes for 130 yards and 1 TD in the Chiefs’ first two games.
He exploded with an 8-157-2 line in the Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Worthy said their focus is now “all about us moving on and being able to elevate our game and who’s gonna be able to get 1% better.”
Worthy benefited greatly from the absence of fellow Chiefs wideout Rashee Rice, who tore his ACL in Week 4 after just four snaps into an eventual win over the AFC West rival Los Angeles Chargers.
Rice joined Worthy and a host of other NFL stars in attendance for the “Skillz & Drillz” youth football camp on June 14 in Houston, Texas. He is back healthy.

The Chiefs also drafted another speedster in Utah State’s Jalen Royals in the fourth round.
Add in the plethora of other supporting cast members like JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquise Brown, and Skyy Moore, and a slimmed-down Travis Kelce at tight end, and the competition for targets in the Chiefs’ offense will be fierce for Worthy every week.
