The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off their worst season in more than a decade and have spent the offseason trying to reset their trajectory. Despite several moves, including signing free-agent running back Kenneth Walker III, significant roster gaps remain.
Heading into the 2026 NFL Draft, Kansas City’s most pressing needs are at wide receiver, offensive line, and along the edge. However, the team holds a valuable advantage with two first-round picks, one acquired in the trade that sent All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams.
While the Chiefs could address multiple needs on Day 1, CBS Sports analyst Tom Fornelli projects a more aggressive approach. He predicts Kansas City will trade up to the No. 3 overall pick to select Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey.
"The Chiefs get aggressive with their many draft picks and move up to address their pass rush by taking Bailey. Patrick Mahomes has somebody to talk about Texas Tech with in the locker room now," Fornelli wrote.
Though the exact trade package is unclear, such a move would likely cost significant draft capital, potentially including their first-round pick in addition to original No.9. Still, given the team’s urgent need for pass-rushing help and Bailey’s elite upside, it could be a risk worth taking.
Kansas City’s struggles in 2025 highlight the issue. The team recorded just 35 sacks, tied for the seventh-fewest in the NFL , underscoring a lack of consistent pressure off the edge. Adding Bailey to a defensive front that includes Chris Jones and George Karlaftis could dramatically improve that production.
Bailey is coming off a dominant season at Texas Tech, where he posted 19.5 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, three pass breakups, and three forced fumbles. His sack total tied for the most in the nation, and his 94.4 PFF pass-rush grade against true pass sets ranked first among edge defenders in this draft class.
Prior to his breakout year, Bailey spent three seasons at Stanford, totaling 14.5 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss. His senior leap has firmly positioned him as a potential top-10 pick.
At 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds, Bailey combines explosive burst with elite first-step quickness, relentless energy, and the speed to bend the edge against offensive tackles. His rare athletic traits and motor give him the potential to become a dominant force at the next level.
