Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes 'able to play' today coming off toe surgery

Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is working to fully recover from the surgery he underwent on his left big toe following the Super Bowl LV loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

All indications throughout the spring have been that the one-time regular-season and Super Bowl Most Valuable Player will be fine by the start of training camp sessions, and he told reporters Thursday he could face a live defense now if necessary.

"If there was a game, I’d be able to play in it, I think," Mahomes explained, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "At the end of the day, there’s still stuff I’m going to have to work through. I’m going to continue to rehab and continue to keep strengthening that stuff. But it’s good to be able to get out there a little bit earlier than the schedule had me and be able to get some work in."

Mahomes aggravated a previous injury to the toe in the playoff win over the Cleveland Browns on Jan. 17 but suggested last month he was ahead of schedule in his recovery. Last week, head coach Andy Reid said his starting QB wasn't limited in workouts.

"He's been doing everything. He's been a full-go," Reid said at that time. "We utilize this as more of a passing camp, and his toe has really done well."
