Patrick Mahomes turned in another strong performance for the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night. The two-time All-Pro quarterback finished with 29-of-41 completed passes for 318 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while also logging six carries for 60 yards and a rushing TD.
It still wasn’t enough, though, as Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars secured an impressive 31-28 home win at EverBank Stadium on “Monday Night Football.”
The Chiefs looked like they were home free in this one after Mahomes led a clutch drive in the fourth quarter. Kareem Hunt finished the sequence with a two-yard TD run, giving Kansas City a 28-24 lead with 1:45 left in the game.
The Jaguars had one more trick up their sleeve, though, and it was Lawrence who scored an incredible game-winning TD run with 23 seconds.
Mahomes spoke to reporters after the game, and he had an honest confession about how tough this loss was for the Chiefs.
Obviously sucks, you let a game slip away,” said Mahomes, via FOX4 Kansas City reporter Harold R. Kuntz. “Credit to them, they played hard the entire game and they've got a lot of good football players, and they closed out there at the end.
“So, it still sucks whenever you get a lead like that and you're not able to hold it through the rest of the game."
It is also worth noting that the Chiefs took a 14-0 lead in the first half, and it appeared they would cruise to victory from that point on. Lawrence and Co. had other ideas, though, and it ultimately resulted in the Jaguars improving to 4-1 on the season.
The Chiefs, on the other hand, have fallen to 2-3 as their rough start to the campaign continues. Their next chance to get back to winning ways will be on Sunday when they return to Arrowhead Stadium for a home game against the Detroit Lions.
