Chiefs reunite with Super Bowl champion

The Kansas City Chiefs have been focused on Patrick Mahomes’ return. And they’ve tried to take care of their own. Plus, they’re still tinkering with the roster, reuniting with a player who helped them win the Super Bowl, according to a post on X by Adam Schefter.

“Free-agent defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah is signing a one-year deal with the Chiefs; per source. It’s a reunion. Ogbah won a Super Bowl with them in (the 2019 season).”

Ogbah is a 10-year veteran who has also played for the Dolphins, Browns, and last year he was with the Jaguars. He’s coming off his least-productive NFL season with only 0.5 sacks.

Chiefs still trying to fix defensive line

Whether the Chiefs will have enough at the edge-rusher position remains to be seen. Currently in the starting lineup are George Karlaftis and Felix Anudike-Uzomah. Ashton Gillotte and rookie R Mason Thomas are slotted in backup roles.

Ogbah started 16 games for the Dolphins in 2024. He totaled five sacks and 11 quarterback hits with nine tackles for loss. But last year with the Jaguars, he started only three games. He totaled four QB hits and two tackles for loss.

The young players are still a key, even with the addition of Ogbah. And the Chiefs have hopes for them, according to ESPN.

“Last season, Gillotte improved in the second half of the season, finishing with 1.5 sacks, seven quarterback hits and an interception,” Nate Taylor wrote. “He’s the safe option. But many veterans have been impressed with Thomas’ quickness and speed off the edge, which makes him a type of pass rusher they haven’t had in many years. If Thomas can prove competent in setting the edge, he could be an intriguing, complementary rusher with George Karlaftis’ power.”

The Chiefs will need the defense to step up with Mahomes trying to get back to his top level early in the season. Losing so many close games last year showed the defense couldn’t come up with key stops. That unit will need to improve this year if the Chiefs want to make the playoffs.
