The Kansas City Chiefs kicked off the offseason with a big question mark looming over the franchise. After a long season filled with retirement rumors, the future of star tight end Travis Kelce became one of the hottest topics in the NFL.

That uncertainty ended this week when the Chiefs confirmed Kelce will return for another season. The team posted a video of the veteran tight end with the caption “Like he never left.”

Kelce’s return comes on a one-year contract worth $12 million, with incentives that could push the total value to $15 million. For Kansas City, it ensures that one of the most productive partnerships in league history, Kelce and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, remains intact heading into the 2026 season.

Kelce, now 36, will enter his 14th NFL season after briefly considering retirement following last year’s campaign. Speaking on "The Pat McAfee Show", he explained that his decision ultimately came down to his belief in the Chiefs’ ability to compete.

“I think the biggest thing coming back was that we got to be even hungrier than we've been before,” Kelce said. “There's a lot of dog mentality right now to get this thing fixed.”

He also mentioned the impact of his fiancée, Taylor Swift, whose tireless work ethic inspired him to keep playing.

“We share the same love for what we do,” Kelce said. “It's amazing to see her keep going to the table, keep finding new things to write about… and still seeing her have that love and joy in what she does.”

“Of course that's motivating… Something like that definitely motivates me to say, ‘You know what, I'm not done, either.’”

Despite questions about his future, Kelce remains one of the league’s most productive players. During the 2025 season, he led Kansas City with 76 receptions, 851 receiving yards, and five touchdowns. The performance extended his streak to 12 consecutive seasons with at least 800 receiving yards, tying Jerry Rice for the longest run in NFL history.

His career numbers place him among the greatest tight ends the sport has ever seen. Kelce holds nearly every major receiving record in Chiefs history, including receptions (1,080), receiving yards (13,002), touchdowns (84), and 100-yard games (38). His 178 postseason receptions are also the most in NFL history.

Now back in Kansas City, Kelce will continue chasing milestones while helping guide the next chapter of the Chiefs’ offense.

Much of the team’s outlook will depend on Mahomes, who is recovering from a torn ACL suffered late last season. If he misses early games, veteran Gardner Minshew could temporarily lead the offense.

Still, Kelce’s decision sends a clear signal about the franchise’s confidence.

As long as No. 87 and No. 15 remain at Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs believe the path to the Super Bowl still runs through Kansas City.
