The Kansas City Chiefs enter the 2026 offseason already planning around uncertainties at the most important position in football. Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL in Week 15 of the 2025 season, forcing him out for the rest of the year and ending Kansas City’s playoff hopes early.
Mahomes has since begun rehab and is targeting a return by Week 1 of the 2026 season, though recovery from a knee reconstruction can vary by several months. Backup Gardner Minshew filled in down the stretch this past season while the Chiefs finished 6-11, their first non-playoff finish in more than a decade following Mahomes’ injury.
With those concerns in mind and the offseason underway, the Chiefs have reportedly added former New Orleans Saints quarterback Jake Haener to their offseason roster. Haener announced the move himself on Instagram, sharing a post outside the Chiefs’ practice facility and updating his profile to reflect the signed team affiliation.
Haener, a fourth-round pick (127th overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft, spent much of the 2025 season on the Saints’ practice squad and did not sign a futures contract with New Orleans after the season. He appeared in eight NFL games in 2024, completing 18 of 39 passes (46.2%) for 226 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and was sacked six times in limited action.
Kansas City’s reported move comes as the Chiefs prepare for life without Mahomes for at least part of training camp and continue evaluating options behind him. With Minshew not currently under contract for 2026, adding Haener gives the club another quarterback to build depth around the potential future return timetable for Mahomes.
If Mahomes’ progress lags into camp, Haener could factor into the early QB1 conversation as the Chiefs seek stability and continuity at the game’s most demanding position. As of this writing, however, Kansas City has not made the signing official.
