Chiefs Still Uncertain Of Left Tackle Position

The Kansas City Chiefs knew the most problematic position on their roster entering the offseason was left tackle.

Joe Thuney, who had to shift outside to tackle from his guard spot because Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris failed to provide good production, was traded to the Chicago Bears.

So the left tackle spot needed filling, and the Chiefs signed San Francisco 49ers backup Jaylon Moore to a two-year deal. With just 12 starts to his name, that hasn't eased the fears over the position.

And for ESPN's Adam Teicher, taking a tackle in the first round is a good backup plan for Moore.

"Moore started only 12 games in four seasons with the 49ers," Teicher writes. "The Chiefs need a backup plan in case he isn't an upgrade over Kingsley Suamataia, Wanya Morris or their other left tackle options from last season. The better question is whether the Chiefs can find value at left tackle from their current No. 31 spot. Would they reach for a lower-graded prospect to fill that need?"

Several mock drafts have the Chiefs taking a tackle at No. 31, but other tackle-needy teams are picking ahead of Kansas City. We aren't sure if there is an appetite to trade up or not, but the Chiefs might have to if they want to get a solid tackle in the first round.

The two names we have seen most linked to the Chiefs are Josh Conerly Jr. and Josh Simmons, and there is a hope that one will be available when the franchise gets ready to select its choice.

So, despite the signing of Moore, it is clear there is still so much uncertainty around the left tackle position, and when you have Patrick Mahomes back there, he can't be a sitting duck.

Which makes getting a solid backup option/potential starter to provide competition for Moore a good piece of business.
