Recently hired New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh was left scrambling for an offensive coordinator after other candidates embraced opportunities elsewhere this winter.
In the end, Harbaugh ultimately hired former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy for the Giants' gig. During an appearance on the "Talkin’ Ball with Pat Leonard" podcast, current Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton suggested that Giants fans who aren't sold on Harbaugh's choice will grow to love Nagy.
"I’m just going to say: 'AAF.' Matt Nagy knows what I’m talking about. AAF," Thornton said about Nagy's style. "He’s very aggressive. I love his mindset and what he brings to the table. I’m excited to see what he brings to New York. I love him."
Leonard revealed that "AAF" stands for "aggressive as (expletive)." That type of mindset could quickly make Nagy a popular figure among Giants players such as quarterback Jaxson Dart and running back Cam Skattebo, two young talents who routinely held nothing back during games as rookies.
Before the Giants hired Nagy, former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken and then-Denver Broncos passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Davis Webb were linked with Big Blue. Monken became the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, while Webb accepted a promotion to remain with the Broncos.
Thornton seems to think the Giants fell into the right hire.
"It was a great opportunity to work with him," Thornton said about Nagy. "He allowed me to go out there, do what I do, let my light shine and make plays. He always instilled that confidence. He’s very intentional and hands-on with the quarterbacks. I love what he did for us. I feel like he’s gonna do great in New York. He’s got an offensive scheme of mind. It was a good [fresh] start for him to be in New York. And I feel like he’s gonna do great there."
Under Nagy, Thornton recorded 19 catches for 438 yards and three touchdowns over 14 games this season. Thornton is on track to reach free agency in March, and it sounds like he'd welcome the opportunity to keep playing for Nagy.
"I don’t see nobody stopping me in that scheme, if I’m being honest, as humble as I am," Thornton said about Nagy's offense. "That scheme is everything. And with the skill set that I have, I’m able to go out there and really show what I can do within that scheme."
It remains to be seen if Harbaugh will take a flier on Thornton at some point after the new league year opens on March 11.
