It’s early, but former Penn State wide receiver Chris Godwin is in the midst of one of the strongest starts to an NFL season in his career.
Through the first three weeks, Godwin has climbed Baker Mayfield’s target hierarchy and cemented his status as one of the quarterback’s favorite targets. Catching 21 of his 24 targets for 253 yards and three touchdowns, Godwin has become a driving force of Tampa’s offense amid a 3-1 start to the 2024 campaign.
According to Pro Football Focus, Godwin is the highest-rated receiver across the entire NFL with a whopping 90.7 overall grade.
As PFF points out, Mayfield has posted a nearly flawless 150.2 passer rating when targeting Godwin so far this season.
It’s easy to see why Mayfield has been more reliant on Godwin, as the veteran receiver currently has the highest catch percentage in the league, by a wide margin.
“You should see him in meetings,” Buccaneers offensive coordinator LIam Coen recently told reporters. “Whenever an offensive coach gets up and speaks in front of our unit, Chris Godwin is taking notes. We do a run-game meeting on Friday and (offensive line coach Kevin) Carberry talks about how we’re going to attack the defense in the run game and Chris Godwin is on the edge of his seat paying attention and taking notes and then will come and ask questions.”
Since being chosen in the third-round of the 2017 NFL Draft, out of Penn State, Godwin has caught 550 passes for 6,943 yards with 37 touchdowns. But, Godwin’s fast start to 2024 may set him up for the strongest season of his career.
