Christian Gonzalez Reflects on Draft Night Frustration, Motivation for NFL Career

For most players, hearing their name called at the NFL Draft is the culmination of years of hard work, sacrifice, and dreams realized. But for Christian Gonzalez, the moment wasn’t exactly as he had envisioned.

Drafted 17th overall by the New England Patriots in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gonzalez recently opened up on the Frat Rules Podcast about the rollercoaster of emotions he experienced that night. He entered the event expecting to be a top-10 pick, yet as the selections rolled in, he found himself slipping down the board.

“That was probably one of the most stressful [nights],” Gonzalez admitted. “I know I’m gonna get picked, but I don’t know where. I don’t know what’s next. I don’t know where in the country I’m gonna live.”

For a player of Gonzalez’s caliber—an elite cornerback prospect with size, speed, and shutdown ability—falling to No. 17 was a surprise and not a pleasant one. Two other corners, Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon (No. 5 to Seattle) and Mississippi State’s Emmanuel Forbes (No. 16 to Washington), were taken ahead of him, a fact that only added to his frustration.

“I was hot,” Gonzalez admitted. “I was mad because I was already the third corner taken... I know I’m not the third corner out of this class.”

Although draft night didn’t unfold as he had envisioned, Gonzalez turned that disappointment into motivation. After an injury-shortened rookie season, he responded with a dominant sophomore campaign, playing a full season and earning second-team All-Pro honors. His breakout performance not only validated his elite talent but also cemented his place as one of the top cornerbacks in the league.
