SANTA CLARA — The San Francisco 49ers aren’t finished retooling their perimeter. Just one week after landing future Hall of Famer Mike Evans, the Niners secured veteran Christian Kirk on a one-year, $6 million deal. The move provides a clear answer to the void left by Brandon Aiyuk and solidifies a depth chart that has undergone a total transformation this spring.

The Slot Specialist Returns to the NFC West

General Manager John Lynch continues to strike while the iron is hot. By bringing in Kirk, the 49ers gain a proven technician who can win at every level of the field. Kirk turns 30 this November and brings a resume that includes 432 career receptions for 5,415 yards and 30 touchdowns. While his regular-season production dipped recently, his postseason play with the Houston Texans last January proved he still has plenty of gas in the tank.

During Houston’s wild-card victory over Pittsburgh, Kirk exploded for 144 yards and a touchdown. He followed that up with another score in a divisional-round loss at New England. That “big game” reliability is exactly what head coach Kyle Shanahan craves, especially with Jauan Jennings still testing the waters of free agency. The locker room energy in Santa Clara is already shifting; you could feel the buzz at the facility this morning as news of the signing spread through the building.

The connection here goes beyond the playbook. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has reportedly looked up to Kirk since their high school days in Arizona. Seeing the two finally pair up in the pros adds a layer of chemistry that most free-agent signings lack. Kirk started his college career at Texas A&M in 2015, just two years after Mike Evans began his historic run as the Buccaneers’ all-time leading receiver. Now, the two former Aggies will lead the charge for the Red and Gold.

“This offense is a dream for a guy who loves to find the open space. Playing with a guy like Mike [Evans] and a quarterback who processes as fast as Brock does? It was an easy decision. I’m here to help this team get over the hump.”

Draft Strategy and the 2026 Outlook

This signing changes the calculus for the upcoming NFL Draft in Pittsburgh. With Evans and Kirk locked in alongside third-year pro Ricky Pearsall, the 49ers no longer have a “must-fill” hole at receiver with the No. 27 overall pick. This flexibility allows Lynch to target the best player available, whether that is an offensive tackle to protect Purdy’s blindside or a disruptive edge rusher to complement Nick Bosa.

The current projected wide receiver room features Evans, Kirk, Pearsall, Demarcus Robinson, and young speedsters Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins. While the 49ers might still look for a return specialist in the middle rounds, the pressure to find an immediate WR1 is gone. The 49ers’ offense looked clinical during the 2025 stretch run, and adding a savvy vet like Kirk only makes them more dangerous in a wide-open NFC.
