Last season, Christian McCaffrey suffered what many would claim was the Madden Curse. Injuries stopped him from continuing on the stellar rebound season he had in 2023.
When he missed games due to his injuries, it became very evident how important the running back is to the San Francisco 49ers’ offense. It seemed as if their high-flying attack came to a standstill. There were other injuries, and some players were not playing as they usually do, but even then, no one could question the former Offensive Player of the Year’s contributions.
Four games in, the non-contact injury he suffered against the Buffalo Bills was the final blow. Since it was a posterior cruciate ligament injury to his right knee, the franchise did not want to take a chance and sent him to visit specialists in Germany.
After nearly 10 months of recovery, 49ers fans were excited to have the 29-year-old return and dazzle them again. Those hopes were dashed when it was reported that a calf issue forced Christian McCaffrey to be limited in practice.
The fear was that his injury concerns had returned, and he would likely miss the season opener. Earlier, reporters caught up with him in the locker room and asked about his injury.
Nothing serious, I can tell you that. I feel great about where I am at. Unfortunately, when you have the injury history that I have, sometimes when you don’t practice, things get blown out of proportion, but I feel great.
Christian McCaffrey replied as recorded by David Lombardi

The newly minted dad to a daughter claims the media took his limited practice news to heart and believed he has an injury that could see him miss a game. Instead, the decision to limit his practice was not along those lines.
Christian McCaffrey is aware that, as much as his exploits on the field have defined his legacy, so have injuries. That is what he leaned into when deciding how much to practice, as he detailed to reporters.
I’m not supposed to go on updating what happened, but as I said, I felt like it was a smart thing to do to not finish the practice. I’ve been there before, and I’ve been my worst enemy in situations like that. I’m proud of myself for not doing that again.
Christian McCaffrey replied
The Stanford alum believes his judgment was right when he stopped himself from going through the entire practice, as it could have impacted his injury. In the past, he would continue practicing, but since he is more aware, he preferred to shut it down.
He believes it was the right decision, considering how things could go from bad to worse if one is not careful. After all, he has the entire season to think about, rather than just focus on giving his all every snap.
The San Francisco 49ers are struggling with a crisis at the receiver position. If McCaffrey were to miss games, there is a fear that they could find it difficult to get 49ers’ offense going. The running back, however, is confident he will play in the season-opener.
I’m focused on this week and playing Seattle on Sunday.
Christian McCaffrey said
This means he is focused on playing in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. They will be traveling to Washington, and from his statement, it seems he will travel and try to recover at the same time.
McCaffrey will be a game-day decision for the 49ers, who know they are going up against a potent Seahawks defense. Even if the RB is limited to a set number of snaps, they would need him to deliver if they are to win their first game.
