The Dallas Cowboys need their defense to improve in a hurry, and cornerback DaRon Bland is among the players who must deliver better results.
Bland has struggled to consistently produce the kind of impact Dallas expected when it signed him to a four-year, $92 million contract in 2025. Defensive coordinator Christian Parker recently addressed the cornerback’s performance, making it clear that the coaching staff expects more from the veteran defensive back.
Parker didn’t hide his expectations when discussing Bland’s performance. The defensive coordinator acknowledged that the two have talked about the cornerback’s struggles and emphasized that Bland needs to finish plays more consistently.
“We need more from him. He knows that, we’ve had some good talks about that. I think he’s battling. The frustrating thing for him and for us has been he’s been close and contesting. Now, it’s about the final piece of just finishing those plays,” Parker said via Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “We just got to get back to making that consistent.”
Parker’s comments suggest that the coaching staff recognizes Bland has been in position to make plays but hasn’t consistently completed them. For a cornerback, those missed opportunities can quickly become costly, particularly when opposing quarterbacks continue testing the secondary.
Bland quickly established himself as one of the Cowboys’ most productive defensive backs after arriving as a fifth-round selection in 2022. He recorded five interceptions as a rookie before taking another major step forward in 2023.
That season, Bland finished with nine interceptions, including five returned for touchdowns, earning first-team All-Pro recognition and a Pro Bowl selection.
However, injuries have interrupted his progress over the past two seasons, and his production has fallen considerably. He recorded just one interception across the 2024 and 2025 campaigns, and his numbers entering Week 9 show that he still has plenty of room for improvement.
According to Pro Football Focus, Bland owns a 43.1 overall grade, ranking 92nd among 102 qualified cornerbacks. He has also allowed 375 receiving yards and four touchdowns in coverage, with opposing quarterbacks posting a 124.6 passer rating when targeting him.
Those numbers are a significant concern for a Dallas defense that has struggled throughout the season. The Cowboys cannot afford continued coverage issues from one of their highest-paid defensive players.
Bland’s struggles also raise questions about how Dallas should distribute playing time in its secondary. Cobie Durant has been another option at cornerback, and his performance has been considerably stronger by PFF’s grading system.
Durant entered Week 9 with a 62.4 overall grade, well above Bland’s mark. Despite that difference, Bland has continued to receive more playing time, with Durant operating behind him and Joey Porter Jr.
The Cowboys must determine whether continuing to give Bland opportunities is the best approach or whether a change in the rotation could help improve the defense.
Parker has made it clear that the coaching staff still believes Bland can turn things around. However, that confidence needs to translate into better performances on the field.
