C.J. Stroud, Texans Suffer Double Loss on Friday
Thomas Shea-USA TODAY Sports

As the Houston Texans prepare for one of their toughest tests of the postseason, the week has taken an unexpected turn. Just two days before their divisional round matchup against New England, the Texans were hit with concerning injury news that could impact both their offensive rhythm and depth.

For a team that leaned on balance and timely execution throughout the regular season, the timing is far from ideal. Quarterback C.J. Stroud now enters the playoff spotlight knowing his supporting cast may be thinner than expected.

With a road game looming against the AFC’s second seed, Houston faces the challenge of adjusting on the fly while trying to extend a promising postseason run. Tom Pelissero reported on Friday afternoon the bad news.

Nico Collins’ Status Creates Major Questions

Wide receiver Nico Collins is dealing with a concussion after the wild-card round win over Pittsburgh. Collins caught three passes for 21 yards in that 30-6 victory, but his availability for the upcoming game has now been decided, and he is out.

Collins was a steady presence throughout the season, finishing with 71 receptions for 1,117 yards and six touchdowns. The former third-round pick out of Michigan has been one of Stroud’s most reliable targets, especially in key situations. If he is unable to go, Houston would be forced to reshuffle its receiving rotation against a New England defense that thrives on limiting explosive plays.

Another Depth Hit at Receiver

Houston is also dealing with an issue involving receiver Watson, a 29-year-old who has seen limited usage this season. Watson recorded three receptions for 30 yards during the regular season and did not receive a target in the wild-card round despite being active against Pittsburgh.

While Watson has not been a focal point of the offense, his availability was also listed as out. Losing multiple options at the same position could shorten the playbook and puts added pressure on the remaining receivers to win consistently against the man coverage the Patriots will bring.

Stroud’s Role Grows Even Larger

Stroud finished the regular season with 3,041 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in his second NFL season. The former second overall pick out of Ohio State has guided Houston to a 12-5 record and a playoff win, showing continued growth.

Against Pittsburgh, Stroud threw an interception but helped lead a dominant 30 -6 win. Ball security has been an area of focus, as he fumbled five times in the game and lost two. With potential injuries around him, Stroud’s decision-making and composure will be even more critical against an experienced Patriots defense.

Texans Face Uphill Road Test in Foxborough

The Texans travel to face the New England Patriots on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. ET on ESPN. New England finished the regular season 14-3 and earned the second seed, making this one of the most difficult environments Houston will see all year.

Houston enters as the fifth seed at 12-5, riding momentum from a convincing wild-card win but now facing adversity at the wrong time. How quickly the Texans adapt to their injury situation could determine whether this playoff run continues or comes to an abrupt end.
