With the deadline for every NFL team’s 53-man roster coming up this Sunday, the Cleveland Browns aren’t wasting time when it comes to rounding out their personnel.

The Browns got an early start on their roster moves Thursday by cutting veteran wide receiver Cedric Tillman. This decision was made before their preseason finale against the New England Patriots.

Less than 24 hours after defeating the Patriots by a score of 37-13, the Browns cut 16 players from their roster.

For starters, the Browns terminated the contracts of cornerbacks Tre Avery and Tyler Hall, offensive tackle Tyre Phillips and tight end Jack Stoll. They also waived the following 12 players:

  • Tight end Drew Biber
  • Offensive tackle Jeremiah Byers
  • Punter Nik Constantinou
  • Safety Christopher Edmonds
  • Cornerback Nate Evans
  • Defensive Tackle Coziah Izzard
  • Defensive Tackle Patrick Jenkins
  • Cornerback Jeremiah McClendon
  • Offensive Tackle Izavion Miller
  • Defensive end Jamil Muhammad
  • Wide receiver Ben Patterson
  • Tight end Jermaine Terry II

Important quarterback decision.

The Browns are expected to keep Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders on their roster for Week 1 and beyond. The rest of the quarterback room, however, is up in the air.

Cleveland may feel inclined to keep Dillon Gabriel, especially after he completed 12 of 15 passes Thursday for 186 yards with three touchdowns. They may also want to keep rookie quarterback Taylen Green.

When asked about his quarterback room, Browns coach Todd Monken was unwilling to make a firm commitment.

“I’m not going to get into that now,” Monken said. “[General manager] Andrew [Berry] and I haven’t had a chance to really talk about that.”

The Browns have until 6 p.m. Sunday to trim their roster down to 53 players.
