The Cleveland Browns have wrapped up their mandatory minicamp and will now be off until training camp begins in July — and with that, the season will be just around the corner.
Minicamp gave the Browns a chance to get all four healthy quarterbacks on the field, including the two rookies: Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
Both quarterbacks had moments where they stood out. Sanders, in particular, looked sharp at times — though much of his work came against backups. Still, one Browns veteran is already impressed with what Sanders brings to the table.
“He’s been amazing, a sponge I would say,” Greg Newsome II said recently. “It is just crazy that a guy this young with this much notoriety can just handle media and things like that. I think his dad has really taught him how to be the guy in the spotlight and understand what comes with it. I think he’s been doing an incredible job of just learning and getting better each day.”
That’s a strong endorsement and shows the maturity with which Sanders is approaching his transition to the NFL. You have to look beyond the fame attached to his last name — Shedeur is working to prove himself as a professional.
Sanders will have a legitimate opportunity to rise as high as the starter on the depth chart, and training camp will ultimately determine where he lands.
Though he was a fifth-round pick, Sanders is being given every opportunity to carve out a role with the Browns and potentially become the guy. The ideal scenario for Cleveland would be that one of the two rookie quarterbacks emerges as the franchise quarterback — allowing the team to use its two first-round picks next year to build elsewhere.
If Sanders can find success on the field, Cleveland will absolutely embrace him and everything he brings to the team. Now, it’s just a matter of time to see what he can be.
