CLEVELAND, OHIO (TheOBR.com) - Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans!
Humans have a couple of traits that make us stand out from the rest of the animal kingdom. Opposable thumbs is one, which gives me an ability to taunt my dog about lacking them. She’s mostly helpless when it comes to manual dexterity, and has to resort to using her mouth to drive her mission to remove squeakers from toys and strew the carnage all over the room. I’d argue that this puts us Homo Sapiens near the top of the list, except that squid and octopi can manage to coordinate multiple limbs at once which, if anyone has ever seen me try to engage in athletic feats could attest, is quite beyond me.
Where we humans really kick butt, though, is pattern recognition. We can detect repeating patterns like nobody’s business. We note that winter follows fall. Bingo! There are a lot of patterns we figure out and use that to our advantage as a species.
This even applies to our recreational activities, like watching NFL football. We can tell that the Browns offense will struggle mightily early and may or may not get its act together in the fourth quarter. We recognize that the Browns defense will give up a touchdown on their opponent’s first drive, seemingly unfailingly.
We know these things. We’re just helpless to stop them. If I could figure out the “why” behind the 2026 Cleveland Browns, I would say so. But this team remains a mystery.
DID WE EVEN MEET THIS WEEK?: The first half was rough. Deshaun Watson was 3-for-9 for 24 yards with three sacks; the Browns had three first downs and 46 yards, and they went to the locker room down 10-0. I spent the halftime video in the Insider Live Topic bemoaning the Browns’ certain doom.
Todd Monken, afterward: "We got a half feeling like, did we even meet this week, coaching? I mean, did we just take the week off and show up freaking today? I'm joking."
He was mostly joking.
Then Watson went 13-for-17 for 140 yards in the second half and led his fourth fourth-quarter game-winning drive of the season, as Mary Kay Cabot noted. Four wins, four fourth-quarter game-winners. ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi has the stat that explains this entire season: Watson's QBR is 22.6 through three quarters (32nd of 33) and 70.4 in the fourth (ninth). Pete Smith points out the Browns are scoring 17.6 points a game, in the same neighborhood as the Bucs, Jets, Eagles, Chargers, Titans and Dolphins. Most of those teams have a lot more losses than we do. When the defense plays like the Browns’ defense has, though, it works out a lot better.
The Watercooler is already debating whether, by the law of averages, Deshaun's luck runs out. Maybe. I've stopped trying to explain it. Watson's version: "It's a still, peaceful moment that I'm in and they feed off the energy that I bring." Mine is less peaceful. I have faith. I also have a cardiologist.
WOLVERINE BLOOD, NO SCOOTER REQUIRED: Carson Schwesinger didn't practice until Friday on that sprained ankle. Monken said the trainers were "semi-optimistic," and every time he asked Carson about it, "he would get this silly smirk on his face, like, 'do you know who you're talking to?'" After Friday's workout, Carson asked how he looked. Monken: "Oh, you look great. I've never seen you better. That ankle looks like, I mean, a million bucks."
All he did was make a game-high 13 tackles and the play of the game. With the Browns down 10-3 early in the fourth, he ripped the ball away from Derrick Henry and Tyson Campbell recovered at the Baltimore 35. "The ball is oxygen," he said. Henry took it on himself: "Put this on me." ESPN says it's his third fourth-quarter fumble since the start of 2025, the most in the league, and it was the Ravens' 17th blown double-digit lead since 2018, also the most in the league.
Henry had 30 yards on the opening drive and 28 on 12 carries the rest of the day. After their first two possessions, the Rats got zero points and six first downs. Mike Rutenberg's defense has now given up early touchdown drives and then slammed the door often enough that even a slightly evolved monkey like our webdork can spot it.
THE GAME BALL GOES TO THE TRADE RUMOR: On third-and-5 with 42 seconds left, Jerry Jeudy caught a 33-yard crossing route to set up the winner, and he led the team with 69 receiving yards. He's playing a career-low 58.5 percent of the snaps behind the two rookies, and his name has been in every trade-deadline column for a week. Monken gave him the game ball: "We're better on offense when Jerry's a part of it. And I can certainly do a better job of incorporating him in it." Jeudy's take: "Got to stay focused and wait your turn, week by week, and eventually once your number's called, make a play."
Our trade-values piece last week argued for keeping him. Sunday made that argument for us.
FIRST PLACE, FINE PRINT: The Browns, Ravens and Steelers are all 4-2, and the Browns own the head-to-head over both. Cabot notes this is the latest in a season the Browns have been in first since Week 10 of 2014, when they were 6-3. Those of us who were around in 2014 will be holding our applause until December. Petrak points out the Browns have never won the AFC North. Jared Verse doesn't care about history: "I said to y'all a thousand times, that's what the Browns supposed to be. That's what the fans deserve."
The Steelers won too, so the whole AFC North sits above .500 after six weeks, the rare feat I mentioned yesterday. Next up are three straight road games: at Tennessee, at Pittsburgh, at New Orleans. The Titans just got their first win of the season by coming back from 13-0 down at Indianapolis, which is exactly the kind of team that worries me. And Jack Duffin reports the Rams' pick we own is currently No. 10.
Monken is under no illusions. "We're under construction, man. All you have to do is look at some map where you've got all these damn signs and stop, and there's a Tonka truck, and there's digging up dirt." I've been calling it the Endless Construction for a week. I'm glad the head coach agrees.
He also said these are the nights you don't want to end: "It's 10:30 and you're tired as hell and you want to be up another 15, 20, 30 minutes to enjoy it." Same here, Coach. Same here, except in my case, it’s 8:30.
QUICKLY: Fred Greetham's takeaways note it's the first 3-0 home start since 2020. Pete Smith has the game story, Jack Duffin has the snap counts, and Fred's post-game check-in is on the OBR YouTube channel. VIPs have post-game interviews in Rumor Central. Also, Pro Football Rumors notes the Browns haven't ruled out re-signing Watson for 2027, despite continuing OBR skepticism. Four game-winning drives will do that.
Have a good one! GO BROWNS! (And go Guards. Tonight, it's all yours.)

Contact With Nature is Linked to Healthy Eating, Shows Encouraging New Study - Researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK surveyed 500 adults about how much time they spend around nature and how much they actually notice it, and found that people with more nature contact tend toward "intuitive eating," which is eating by listening to your body instead of following a diet's rules. Lead author Viren Swami thinks nature helps people appreciate their bodies and go easier on themselves, and that makes them less likely to stress-eat. He's upfront that it's self-reported data and needs more study. Still, the prescription is a walk outside. My nature contact this weekend was the walk from the couch to the refrigerator between the Browns and the Guards. Results pending.
