The Cleveland Browns will enter their season opener with Shedeur Sanders listed as their emergency quarterback. That doesn't necessarily mean he'll stay on the bench all year long.
Sanders was selected by the Browns with the 144th overall pick in this year's draft. The former Colorado star had an inconsistent preseason, completing 58.6% of his passes in the preseason for 152 yards with two touchdowns. His main competition, fellow rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel, completed 67.6% of his preseason pass attempts for 272 yards with one touchdown and an interception.
Once the preseason came to a close, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski named Gabriel the primary backup to Joe Flacco. The coaching staff really liked what they saw on and off the field from the Oregon product.
“It’s such an all-encompassing evaluation,” Stefanski told reporters. “Everything the guys did in the games was important. We also saw a lot of them out here in practice and how they are at their craft and (Gabriel) is certainly somebody that we think is getting better and better.”
With the Browns set to take the field this Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, an interesting report about Sanders surfaced online.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Browns believe there's a place for Sanders on the roster. However, they don't expect to play him at all this season.
"Don't plan on seeing the fifth-round pick on the field this season unless things get really really weird," Russini said.
If you're a fan of Sanders, this probably isn't what you wanted to hear. However, it could be the best thing for his development.
Besides, injuries are a part of the game. The Browns might have no choice but to elevate Sanders on the depth chart during the regular season.
