Coaching Profile Of Saints Assistant Candidate Robert Prince
USA TODAY Sports

Just hired this past week, New Orleans Saints coach Kellen Moore must move quickly to fill out his coaching staff.

There have been a few spots filled so far. Keith Williams was retained from last year's staff to remain the WR coach. Chase Haslett was brought in to be the new TE coach. Brendan Nugent was brought back as offensive line coach after a previous stint with the team.

Haslett and Nugent have previous ties with Moore. It makes sense that several staff vacancies will likely have ties with the new coach. This is being reflected in most of the interviews the team had through the weekend and set up into this week.

On Saturday, the Saints spoke to recently hired Miami Dolphins WR coach Robert Prince for their offensive coordinator opening. Here's a closer look at Prince's career.

Robert Prince

Prince was a wide receiver at San Bernardino Valley College, but began his coaching career as a graduate assistant after enrolling at Humboldt State in 1989. He'd be there two years, adding a third as a graduate assistant at Montana State in 1991.

In 1992, Sacramento State brought Prince in as their WR coach. He'd be there for two seasons before getting hired to be the offensive coordinator at Division II Fort Lewis, a position he'd hold for two years.

Portland State brought Prince on board in 1998. He'd be the WR coach there his first year before being promoted to offensive coordinator and QB coach for the next two seasons. Prince moved on to Boise State in 2001, where he'd be WR coach and passing game coordinator for three years with the team.

In 2004, Prince landed his first NFL job. It was with the Atlanta Falcons, where he'd serve in various roles on their offensive staff until 2006. From there, Prince moved on to the Jacksonville Jaguars as an assistant WR coach for two years then as WR coach for the Seattle Seahawks in 2009.

It was back to the collegiate ranks for Prince in 2010 as WR coach and passing game coordinator for Colorado. In 2011, he'd return for his second stint with Boise State. Prince was the Broncos WR coach for one year before taking offensive coordinator duties through 2012 and 2013.

In 2011, Boise State's quarterback was Kellen Moore, current New Orleans head coach. The Broncos went 12-1 that season. Over the next two years with Prince as offensive coordinator, Boise State had a combined record of 19-7.

Prince's college success earned him another trip to the NFL in 2014, this time as a WR coach with the Detroit Lions. He'd hold that position for seven seasons through 2020, the longest stint he'd be anywhere in his career. Kellen Moore was the third-string quarterback for the Lions in 2014, but was released during the 2015 preseason.

After Detroit, Prince was the WR coach for the Houston Texans in 2021 before landing that same role with the Dallas Cowboys the following year. In 2022, his first year with Dallas, Prince and Moore were again reunited briefly. This time, Moore was the Cowboys offensive coordinator with Prince as WR coach for an offense that held top-15 rankings in every category and was fourth in points scored.

Prince remained with the Cowboys through this past season, when a new coaching regime took over. He landed a new job quickly, getting hired as the new WR coach for the Miami Dolphins in late January.

Robert Prince and Kellen Moore do have some career familiarity. Prince does have some offensive coordinator experience, though none at the NFL level. However, Moore has stated that he'll be the play-caller for the Saints.

Prince, 59, has overseen a number of productive wideouts through his lengthy coaching career. The Saints have an explosive duo at the position with Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, but little quality depth behind them.
