Colin Cowherd addresses the Chiefs’ biggest concern in 2025, it’s not the Bills or Ravens

Every offseason in recent memory has seen the media question the Kansas City Chiefs, whether it be about the dynasty crumbling, Patrick Mahomes’ eliteness, or if this year will be their downfall.

After the Philadelphia Eagles brushed aside the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl last season, those questions have been more ferocious than ever.

Colin Cowherd recently called the Chiefs’ dynasty over, referencing Tom Brady and the Patriots dominating the AFC East due to their division competition, until that fell apart.

There is a strong case to say the AFC West is the strongest division in the NFL, with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers only heading in one direction.

However, while that was a concern of Cowherd’s, the biggest was about Patrick Mahomes being blown out now in two Super Bowls, and he explained exactly why that happened.

Colin Cowherd shares concern over the Kansas City Chiefs’ O-Line being rebuilt for a third time in Mahomes era

When explaining why the Kansas City Chiefs’ dynasty was over last week, Cowherd referred to the AFC West finally being a force again with Sean Payton, Jim Harbaugh, and Pete Carroll coaching the other sides.

In his latest segment, he referred to this again, while also looking at Mahomes’ ageing and increasing cost, alongside the ages of his tight end, Travis Kelce, and his head coach, Andy Reid.

In essence, he was talking about the band breaking up at some point in the near future. In the immediate future of 2025, Cowherd shared his concern about the O-Line being rebuilt again after the Eagles’ Super Bowl blowout.

He said, “Let’s be honest about Mahomes. He’s already been blown out in two Super Bowls. He’s been blown out in two Super Bowls.

“Why? It’s not because he’s a bad quarterback. They unraveled because of the O-Line, which, by the way, is getting rebuilt for a third time, let him down.”

The Chiefs drafted Ohio State left tackle Josh Simmons with the 32nd pick, who has already been compared to Trent Williams, only after trading All-Pro guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears, however.

Chiefs’ track record of O-Line rebuild in Mahomes era is strong, 2022 Super Bowl proves it

After Patrick Mahomes was forced to run for his life in the 2020 Super Bowl loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, GM Brett Veach made big changes to the O-Line.

The Chiefs drafted Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith, both of whom are still on the line now, and traded for Baltimore Ravens tackle Orlando Brown Jr.

They then went on to win Super Bowl LVII in that epic clash with the Eagles, with Andrew Wylie at right tackle. He then moved to the Washington Commanders for the following season.

Brown also moved to the Cincinnati Bengals, but the Chiefs have addressed left tackle with rookie Josh Simmons, who Mahomes said ‘has the chance to be one of the best there is at that left tackle position.’

The loss of Joe Thuney, who played LT in the blowout loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, will inevitably be felt, but they have a good track record of turning around the O-Line play.

What might also be of concern is that the starting O-line is effectively the same as last year, except for Thuney for Simmons at LT. Jawaan Taylor at RT was a particular problem for the Chiefs last season…
