According to Michael McCleary of the Indianapolis Star, Indianapolis Colts All-Pro linebacker Darius Leonard said on Sirius XM NFL Radio that he believes longtime veteran quarterback Philip Rivers had something "left in the tank" after spending one season with the franchise ahead of announcing his retirement last month.
As much as Leonard understood Rivers' decision, the 25-year-old defensive star didn't see it coming.
"Not too many people play 17 years starting at quarterback," Leonard said. "So you know you've got to think about that each year, especially when you get banged up. But, I mean, it was definitely a complete shock."
The Colts currently don't have a proven starting signal-caller on the roster and have routinely been linked with wantaway Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz in trade rumors. Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich and senior offensive assistant Press Taylor both worked with Wentz when employed by the Eagles, and it's been reported Wentz wants a reunion with the pair.
"I mean, I watch it, but I don't get emotionally invested in it, you know?" Leonard said of his team's quarterback search. "I don't care if he's young. I don't care if he's old. I don't care if he's well-known or not.
"If you can come in and put the team first and help us win ball games, well, come on down to the Indianapolis Colts."
