Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich said that before the team signed Eric Fisher to play left tackle, they considered moving All-Pro Quenton Nelson from left guard to take over the position.
"We did want to do everything we could do to keep him at left guard," Reich explained during a conference call at Colts minicamp Monday. "We were keeping the option open to put him out there, but we knew we were going to work pretty hard against that."
After Anthony Castonzo's retirement, Indianapolis was in serious need of someone to fill in at left tackle. Eventually, they signed Fisher to take the spot, but it sounds like if they hadn't landed him, Nelson would have been asked to slide over a spot. Nelson said that he would have moved had the team asked him but admitted he was glad to be staying at guard.
"I definitely wanted to stay at left guard, but I was going to do whatever the team required me to do," Nelson said. "You just have to do what is required and help the team in any way possible to win games."
Since entering the league in 2018, Nelson has been among the most dominant lineman in the league, having been named a First-Team All-Pro each of his first three seasons.
