Colts backup quarterback Anthony Richardson was charged on Monday with a Class B misdemeanor for possession of marijuana, per Tyler Haughn of FOX 59. A bench trial is scheduled for Jan. 4, 2027.
The charge stems from a traffic stop in Carmel, Ind., on Oct. 12, when police pulled Richardson over for having an expired registration. The “odor of marijuana” was detected when approaching Richardson’s vehicle, according to the officer.
Richardson allegedly admitted to smoking in his car to avoid doing it in front of his children. The 24-year-old also allegedly admitted that the small amount of marijuana found in the vehicle belonged to him. He was cited for an expired registration and issued a summons for possession of marijuana, but he was not arrested.
“We are aware of the situation involving Anthony Richardson and are currently gathering additional information,” the Colts stated. “We will have no further comment at this time.”
Richardson, who has disappointed since the Colts drafted him fourth overall in 2023, hasn’t made a start since his second year or taken a snap this season. The Colts extended Daniel Jones on a two-year, $88MM deal in March, keeping him in place as their starter. Richardson requested a trade in late February, but then-general manager Chris Ballard did not find an offer to his liking. Despite his desire for a change of scenery, Richardson went through a normal offseason without any drama and held off Riley Leonard to win the Colts’ QB2 job over the summer.
Jones has gotten off to a rough start this season for the 2-4 Colts, who fired Ballard on Monday, but is not in imminent danger of losing his job. Meanwhile, Richardson is in a contract year after the team made the easy decision to decline his option for 2027 last spring. If the Colts don’t want to let Richardson walk for nothing in the offseason, interim GM Ed Dodds may try to find a taker before the Nov. 10 trade deadline. However, considering Richardson could face discipline under the NFL’s personal conduct policy, a trade looks even less likely now than it did before this incident occurred.
