Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders couldn't keep the momentum rolling in the second year of their partnership.
The reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year missed 10 games with knee, hamstring and elbow injuries, once again raising concerns about his lanky frame and his durability.
He's had plenty of time to recover from those ailments, and according to general manager Adam Peters, he's trending in the right direction.
Talking to "The Insiders," Peters gushed about Daniels' strong offseason.
“He’s already jump-started [his recovery],” Peters said. “He’s had an incredible offseason. He’s really been diligent about working this offseason — he’s been out in L.A., but he’s working with his trainer out there, with his throwing coach, and he’s in great shape. He came back here Phase 1 and he looks great, he feels great, he’s healthy.”
When healthy, the LSU product showed that he could be one of the flashiest two-way quarterbacks in the game.
According to Football Reference, he completed 69 percent of his passes for 3,568 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions as a rookie, adding 148 carries for 891 yards and one score.
His numbers regressed significantly in year two, and the Commanders have to do a better job of keeping him out of harm's way, even if that means running fewer designed runs for him.
Daniels will now enter a make-or-break season in which he'll need to prove not only that he can stay healthy but also that his rookie success wasn't a fluke.
The Commanders won't have to face a winning team's schedule again in 2026, and that should also help him get his legs back under him and silence the critics.
