Commanders GM Gets Brutally Honest on Jayden Daniels

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters offered a straightforward assessment of quarterback Jayden Daniels after a costly decision contributed to a 23-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6.

The defeat left the Commanders at 1-4-1 and alone in last place in the NFC East, despite a second-half push that nearly produced a comeback.

Daniels, now in his third NFL season, has shown flashes of the dual-threat ability that made him a first-round pick, but he has also committed errors that have proved expensive.

One such moment arrived Monday night when Washington faced fourth-and-short inside the red zone. Rather than attempt a pass that could keep the drive alive, Daniels threw the ball out of bounds.

A penalty flag had been thrown on the play; had the pass been completed, the Commanders would have retained a chance to attempt a field goal once the 49ers accepted the penalty.

Because the ball went out of bounds, San Francisco declined the flag and the possession ended in a turnover on downs.

Peters later addressed the sequence during an appearance on Junks Radio, recounting both the team’s conversation with Daniels and the quarterback’s own explanation.

“Jayden has addressed it and he knows that’s not a situation where you can throw the ball away,” Peters said. “He said he saw the flag there and thought it was on them and that’s not an excuse, that’s just what he said. And he knows moving forward he’s gotta put the ball in play and try to make a play.”

The comment underscores the elevated expectations surrounding Daniels even as the franchise navigates a difficult start.

Daniels has already missed two games this season after suffering an elbow injury against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2, departing that contest at halftime.

In the games he has played, he has completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 759 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions, while adding 213 rushing yards and two scores on 25 carries.

Those numbers reflect productive stretches, yet the Commanders’ overall record shows how thin the margin for error has become.

Washington now enters its bye week, a brief pause before a primetime Sunday-night matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8.

How Daniels and the offense respond after the break will shape whether the season can still be salvaged, and Peters’ public remarks make clear that the organization expects the quarterback to treat every critical down as a chance to extend a possession rather than concede it.
