Commanders HC Dan Quinn answers biggest question in opening press conference
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Commanders' new head coach Dan Quinn answered what many fans were wondering during Monday's opening press conference:

Will Quinn call plays?

Quinn was in charge of the Dallas Cowboys defense for the last three seasons and before that, he took over the defensive play-calling duties while he was head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

But he won't be doing that in Washington.

Instead, Commanders' defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. will be in charge of calling plays on defense while Kliff Kingsbury handles the offense.

“Joe will call the plays on defense and Kliff will call the plays on offense,” Quinn said. “I’ll certainly be there. The game management part is so critical, so I wanted to be sure the best version of me is coaching the entire team.”

Why Dan Quinn is Confident in Washington's Coordinator Hires

Quinn worked closely with Whitt during his time in Dallas where a bond and trust were formed, which made it an easy decision to bring him along to Washington.

“I had a chance to be shoulder to shoulder with Joe Whitt Jr. for three years, and I’ve seen the detail, connection, and play style,” Quinn said. “You better be a good tackling team and be able to take the ball away, and Joe’s team has been excellent with those. I cut my teeth on defense, so that’s important, but Joe will call the plays there.”

As for Kingsbury, Quinn never worked with him in the past, but he has played against him, which was never an easy task.

“Kliff has always been someone I’ve kept up with – we hit it off the first time we met at an awards show, and we’ve competed against each other in the past,” Quinn said. “In the same why of why I wanted to hire Kyle (Shanahan) years ago, Kliff was hard to game plan against. You felt it was going to be tough going against him.”

This marks Quinn's second chance as a head coach in the NFL and he's certain with his growth and coaching staff that it will be different than it was in Atlanta.
