Former NFL Pro Bowl receiver Wes Welker was hired by Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn to be a personnel analyst to assist the front office and the coaching staff.
ESPN insider Mike Reiss was the first to break the news via social media Monday afternoon.
"Wes Welker, who was in the news last week as a worthy nominee for the Patriots Hall of Fame (672 catches over 6 regular seasons + another 69 in playoffs), is in the news again this week," Reiss tweeted. "Welker, the former Dolphins WRs coach, has landed on the Commanders staff, per sources."
Welker and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury know each other well. More than 20 years ago the two were teammates at Texas Tech for three seasons. They have both been installed in the Red Raiders Ring of Honor.
Welker was the Dolphins’ WRs coach from 2022–2024 and previously held the same role in San Francisco from 2019–2021, where he worked with new Commanders' receiver Deebo Samuel.
Welker played 12 seasons in the league, most notably for the New England Patriots from 2007-12. He broke into the league with the San Diego Chargers and also played for the Dolphins, Denver Broncos and St. Louis Rams.
Welker, 44, went undrafted out of Texas Tech in 2004 and signed with the San Diego Chargers as a free agent.
However, he is best known for his six seasons with the New England Patriots, where he was named an All-Pro four times and went to five Pro Bowls playing with perennial Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady.
