Commanders insider shuts down fan panic over Marshon Lattimore's OTA no-show

Marshon Lattimore's absence from voluntary organized team activities was a hot topic of discussion among the Washington Commanders fan base. One team insider looked to quash these concerns with some sound reasoning regarding the no-show.

Whether that'll suffice remains to be seen.

Lattimore was the Commanders' first marquee trade acquisition under new general manager Adam Peters before the 2024 deadline. A frustrating hamstring injury limited his contribution, and performance levels were nowhere near the level expected. Fans thought he'd be eager to get involved quickly this offseason en route to a bounce-back campaign, but that wasn't the case.

The veteran chose to stay away, as did left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Their respective decisions could be contract-related. As for the four-time Pro Bowl cornerback? Most perceived this as a bad look from the outside looking in.

John Keim from ESPN looked to provide a sense of calm. He didn't think Lattimore skipping OTAs was a big deal. It's something he did during his time with the New Orleans Saints, so he's sticking to the approach. The respected insider also thought too much was being made of the situation.

I don't think I'm worried just yet about Marshon Lattimore not being here, and I think a little bit too much is being made or worried about that. I don't think this is about a contract. This is what he did his last couple of years in New Orleans, so I think this is a continuation of what he's done.John Keim via Newsweek

Lattimore is an experienced pro who knows how to prepare. He'll have heard all the criticism surrounding his production — albeit with mitigating circumstances attached — last season. He'll be chomping at the bit to silence his doubters, and the Commanders will be counting on him heavily in their quest for the Super Bowl.

The Saints didn't believe Lattimore had much left and disposed of him accordingly. Peters held a different opinion, and those in power are giving him a pass for last season's efforts. That vote of confidence is key, but repaying this faith is paramount.

Lattimore has enormously high stakes attached to his fortunes in 2025. If he can provide the accomplished coverage presence Washington thought before the trade and gets a clear run of luck on the health front, a new deal ahead of time might be in the offing next spring. Any further regression of injury concerns could see him released, saving $18 million on the Commanders' salary cap.

Not showing up to OTAs irked some fans. But if Lattimore imposes himself upon returning to the squad, these concerns will become a distant memory.
