A dismal preseason loss against the New England Patriots was a brutal wake-up call for the Washington Commanders. And one of the franchise's longest-serving players issued a passionate rallying cry to ensure the same doesn't happen again.
Head coach Dan Quinn was not happy with the execution and overall effort from his squad. This is not what he worked so hard to build during Washington's memorable 2024 campaign. Standards slipped dramatically, and it didn't matter if 30 players weren't suited up for the clash.
Second-year general manager Adam Peters also didn't think much of the performance. He's made a flurry of transactions in recent days, which should raise urgency considerably for those fighting with everything they have to stick around.
Jeremy Reaves was one of the few players to emerge with credit at Gillette Stadium. He knows what it's like to rise from obscurity and overcome significant adversity. The All-Pro special teamer implored his teammates to make every snap count. Otherwise, it could be their last.
You have to understand, and I might understand it better than a lot of guys, that this is a small window. This is a very small, tight window where you never know when your last play could be. Just going out there, playing every play like it's your last. Make sure that when you get off that grass, you leave it all out there. I think a lot of guys are understanding that now. This is a business, and you have to perform at this business. Because if you don't, you won't be here. The standard is the standard. No matter who it is or where you came from.Jeremy Reaves via 7News DC
The preseason opener was not good from the Commanders.

What will Monday vs Bengals look like?@JR1ERA told me, "Guys, taking ownership of what's asked of them...you have to maximize every chance you get on the field...I think a lot of guys are understanding that now." pic.twitter.com/98s0TmJjE4
If they haven't got the message by now, they never will.
This is a do-or-die situation for many. There are under two weeks left before final cuts. Quinn and Peters have a good indicator of who they're going to take through, but there is still time to change the narrative. That can only be done through improved consistency and work rate.
Nothing else will do.
The Commanders will find out a lot more about their players under the Monday Night Football spotlight against the Cincinnati Bengals. Strong character is needed, especially considering Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase, and the rest of their starters will be turning out. Washington isn't going to win every rep, but they need to put up more of a fight.
If not, that will tell Quinn and Peters all they need to know.
