Commanders might be desperate enough to bring back a name fans never expected

The Washington Commanders' roster construction is almost set. Adam Peters has been more aggressive this offseason with the team's Super Bowl window open. He's also not willing to settle, depending on what opportunities present themselves in terms of incomings to the squad.

Some needs are more glaring than others. Fans are growing increasingly concerned about the lack of explosive edge rushers currently. Peters knows what he's doing, so it would be a big shock if the front-office leader didn't find another productive pass-rushing option before Week 1 rolls around.

The Commanders also lack safety depth. Letting Jeremy Chinn walk in free agency was a calculated risk by Peters. Hopes are high that Will Harris can fill the void, but the potential complications are there for all to see if one of the projected starting duo gets injured.

Commanders need more at the safety position before 2025 season begins

Percy Butler and Jeremy Reaves are special-teams players who struggle when tasked with responsibilities on the defensive rotation. Tyler Owens has the physical profile to make a bigger impact, but he remains an unknown quantity after being brought along gradually as a rookie.

It's a situation to monitor closely as preparations unfold. If Peters decides more is needed, perhaps thinking outside the box would be a good way to go.

Kendall Fuller remains a free agent after spending last season with the Miami Dolphins. He performed relatively well when called upon in 2024, conceding just 358 receiving yards through the air and a 97.7 passer rating when targeted. But with the AFC East club looking to cut costs, he was sacrificed shortly after the campaign concluded.

Fuller is 30 years old and probably sees more of a future at the cornerback spot. Even so, the league is littered with corners who switch the backend to prolong their careers. Looking at the player's sound tackling and awareness, it's something to consider at the very least.

The Commanders have five starting-caliber cornerbacks as things stand. Fuller coming in would provide versatility. Moving him to the safety position brings its fair share of benefits. Whether it's something Washington or the player would contemplate is another matter.

Expectations are high for the Commanders in 2025. Taking a calculated risk like this could enhance their hopes considerably if Fuller is willing.
