The Washington Commanders are close to finally coming home.

The team and the District are announcing on Monday plans for a new stadium to be constructed on the old RFK Stadium site where Washington football called home until 1996.

Said owner Josh Harris: “Without exaggeration, this will be the best stadium in the country when it’s built.''

The cost is expected to exceed $3 billion, with the new building featuring a roof - a must-have if the NFL is going to hold a Super Bowl in Washington D.C. for the first time ever.

And if this all goes through, a Super Bowl is coming.

Said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell: “We’ve got to get it built first. So we’ve got to get there. But I really do think this community could be a great host for a Super Bowl. I think the stadium is always that missing piece."

Harris has been championing a new stadium to be erected by the year 2030. The team has a lease on Northwest Stadium in Landover which runs through 2027, but they have the option to extend until the new facility is completed.

The long-term goal is to bring Super Bowls and championship events such as a Final Four to the District. Mayor Muriel Bowser also wants the facility to be able to handle major concerts and have the district become a stop for musical acts from around the world.

Bowser is looking to erect a stadium, housing, parking garages and retail shopping space on the 174-acre site. She also has discussed a recreational facility for the town to enjoy.

Any taxpayer money that is used for the project must be approved by the D.C. Council. The council has been divided on the stadium issue in the past.

Summarized Harris: “What a great day.''
