Commanders RB Brian Robinson reportedly wrestled away gun from two teens prior to shooting

Washington Commanders' rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. wrestled away a gun from one teen before being shot by a second teen in an attempted armed robbery Sunday evening in Washington. D.C. chief of police Robert Contee provided details of the incident to reporters Monday, according to NBC4 Washington.

Contee says the two juvenile suspects are between the ages of 15 and 17.

Robinson had left a food establishment on H Street when he was approached by the teens. He was shot in the leg and hip during the ordeal. He suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said team doctors are optimistic that Robinson could return to the field sometime this season. He underwent surgery Monday at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

“Surgery went well!” Robinson shared on an Instagram post. “Thanks for the prayers! God is Great!”

There was expectation Robinson would be released from the hospital Monday.

It’s unclear how long Robinson will be out, Rivera told reporters there is no timeline for his return. But he has not been ruled out for the season.

“It’s a matter of time before he’s out here,” Rivera stated, per the Athletic’s Ben Standig.

Doctors are optimistic Robinson will recover and return this season. Team officials will meet with doctors following another examination to determine the course of action in regards to Robinson’s status on the 53-man roster.

If the team places him on the non-football injury list or injured reserve, he must miss at least the first four games of the season.

Robinson appeared set to be the Commanders starting running back, jumping ahead of third-year pro Antonio Gibson, who led the team in rushing each of the last two seasons.
