Commanders Release T D.J. Humphries

Humphries, a longtime Cardinal, spent 2016 as a full-time starter at right tackle before moving to the left side the next season. The one-time Pro Bowler held down the role in Arizona until he tore his ACL late in 2023. He has played in just 10 games since then, including two with the Chiefs in 2024 and eight with the Rams last season.

The 32-year-old Humphries did not draw any reported offseason interest before he joined the Commanders for a non-guaranteed $1.3MM on Aug. 25. Because Humphries is a vested veteran, all of that money would have become guaranteed had he been on the Commanders’ Week 1 roster.

Washington added Humphries as a potential depth option two-plus weeks after losing cornerstone left tackle Laremy Tunsil to a triceps tear. Tunsil will miss a significant portion of the regular season, and the Commanders are giving Brandon Coleman first crack at filling in for the five-time Pro Bowler.

Coleman started 12 of 16 games at left tackle as a third-round rookie in 2024, but he lost his spot when the Commanders acquired Tunsil from the Texans during the ensuing offseason. While Coleman slid inside to take over as the Commanders’ starting left guard entering last year, they benched him after Week 2. He got back into the lineup to make three late-season starts at left tackle in place of an injured Tunsil.

If Coleman struggles this year, the Commanders could plug in swing tackle Andrew Wylie, who has 93 career starts on his resume. Those two and starting RT Josh Conerly Jr. are the only tackles on the Commanders’ 53-man roster, while Trenton Scott (26 career starts) and Esa Pole (four) are on their practice squad. Coleman, Wylie, Conerly and the rest of Washington’s O-linemen are currently preparing to face an ultra-talented Eagles defense in Sunday’s season opener.
