Large sections of the fanbase and media have been critical of the Washington Commanders for their lack of urgency when it comes to finding productive pass rushers this offseason. Adam Peters knows what he's doing, but it's not hard to see where the complications could arise if the new additions don't meet their end of the bargain.
Peters will be keeping a close eye on developments with his squad and the goings-on around the league. His aggressive nature dictates as much, and the front-office leader will strike with conviction if the right opportunities present themselves.
One major trade elsewhere might provide the Commanders with another potential option to consider. The San Francisco 49ers struck a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for edge rusher Bryce Huff after an underwhelming first year in the NFC East. This will become official on June 1, and the defending Super Bowl champions are getting a mid-round pick in return, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The Niners believe Huff can thrive in a system better suited to his strengths. However, his arrival isn't going to be good news for everybody.
There's speculation around the future of former second-round pick Yetur Gross-Matos in the wake of Huff's arrival in San Francisco. The No. 38 overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft suffered an injury-hit campaign last time around after joining the Niners in free agency. That dented his progress significantly, and it could also turn out to be the end of his brief time in the California sunshine.
The Commanders should monitor this situation closely. Gross-Matos is talented, although he's never quite met expectations associated with the high-end second-round selection. Injuries with the Carolina Panthers didn't help his cause, but he emerged as a stout force against the run in 2023 to get his big free-agent move.
Gross-Matos just turned 27 years old with 17 career sacks in five seasons. Not exactly jaw-dropping numbers by any stretch of the imagination, but the chances of the player developing further under the exceptional guidance of Washington's coaching staff are high.
It is something to keep an eye on. The Niners might keep faith with Gross-Matos in the hope he can get a better run of luck on the health front. If not, then he becomes another potential acquisition for the Commanders in a desperate position of need.
