Commanders stretched for Laremy Tunsil and AFC scout gets the logic

The Washington Commanders' all-in trade for left tackle Laremy Tunsil remains a subject of fierce debate. One AFC scout thought Adam Peters overpaid to secure his services, but for a very good reason.

Jayden Daniels is a phenomenon. He's the franchise quarterback everyone associated with the Commanders thought he'd become. The No. 2 pick in 2024 did this much faster than anticipated, which left Peters with no option other than to build around his new prized possession.

The best way to do this was in the trenches. Washington's trade to acquire Tunsil from the Houston Texans was a bombshell move. Peters also used the No. 29 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft on Josh Conerly Jr., who looks set to start immediately at the right tackle spot, judging by the glowing early reports regarding his transition.

AFC scout believes Commanders overpaid for Laremy Tunsil, but he understood the logic

Bigger expectations have been placed on Tunsil. An unnamed AFC scout speaking to Jeremy Fowler from ESPN claimed the Commanders gave up more than he thought the former first-round pick was worth. But if this helps provide Daniels more stability in the pocket, it'll be worth the investment.

He's still a top-three tackle for me. And anything you can do to protect Jayden Daniels and load up while he's on his rookie deal is smart. They gave up a little more than I'd like but I trust AP [general manager Adam Peters] that he knows what he's doing here.AFC scout via ESPN

He's right. Peters knows what he's doing and should be trusted fully.

The general manager completely transformed the Commanders sooner than anyone thought was possible. Peters gutted the roster and showed no mercy to those who didn't fit into the team's new way of thinking. Washington went from an also-ran to the NFC Championship game in Year 1. This saw the front-office leader become more aggressive with the team's Super Bowl window open.

Tunsil is an elite performer. He's among the league's best pass protectors and is highly motivated to repay the faith shown in him by the Commanders. Skipping voluntary OTAs caused a stir, but it won't matter if he reaches or perhaps even exceeds expectations.

The Commanders gave up significant assets for Tunsil. But to get the best, you have to pay. And if the blindside enforcer has the sort of impact Peters believes he's capable of, nobody will be talking about what it cost to get him to the franchise.

This has the scope to change everything for Daniels and the Commanders' offensive line. Something that would almost guarantee Tunsil gets another lucrative financial commitment at some stage.

That's a win-win for everybody.
