Commanders WR Jaylin Lane Likely Out For Season

Jaylin Lane suffered an ankle injury during the Commanders’ Week 4 loss. The second-year receiver/returner may not return in 2026.

Testing revealed a fracture and dislocation of Lane’s ankle, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. As a result, he is likely out for the remainder of the season. Lane is still in London (the location of yesterday’s Colts-Commanders contest) at this time, and Rapoport notes further testing will take place.

The injured ankle has been stabilized, per Rapoport. Even so, a lengthy recovery period is now in store for Lane. The 24-year-old’s absence will not have a significant impact on Washington’s offense, seeing as he has totaled just 18 receptions across 19 career games. The Commanders’ special teams will be hindered by this injury, however.

Lane has been a regular in the return game since arriving. The former fourth-rounder scored two punt return touchdowns during his rookie year, and he has continued to operate on that front in 2026. Lane has also totaled 15 kick returns to date, amassing just over 1,000 all-purpose yards in his career. A lengthy absence will deal a blow to Washington’s production in the return game as the team looks to rebound from a 1-3 start.

Recent free agent signing Austin Ekeler has experience as a kick returner, including his time in 2024 when he filled that role with Washington. A reprisal of special teams work could be in store with Lane out of the fold. Otherwise, other internal options could receive a look or the team could explore an outside addition for the returner role.
