Could benched QB Matt Ryan help coach for the Colts?

The Indianapolis Colts stunned the football world this week by hiring former center and ESPN NFL analyst Jeff Saturday as its interim head coach.

Saturday's hiring opened up a can of worms that makes the Colts impossible to predict for the future, particularly with who exactly will call the plays for the team going forward.

Saturday's hiring is, to be kind, unorthodox. Could the next bizarre move be giving benched quarterback Matt Ryan a role in the offensive game plan?

Ryan has seen plenty of ups and downs in his career, and it looks like his playing days could be over after being yanked from the Colts' starting lineup.

It's very possible, without a clear plan for offensive coaching going ahead, that Ryan could find himself helping with the offensive game plans on an interim basis.

Ryan would have to want to be involved with coaching first. However, with young quarterback Sam Ehlinger and capable backup Nick Foles on the roster, the Colts could afford the former Falcons star to take an unexpected role in the offense on the sideline.

It's not a move that the NFL has many precedents for, but neither is hiring a guy who has never coached in the NFL before to lead your team on an interim basis.

The Colts don't have a clear path forward, and Saturday's hiring does nothing to change that. If Indy is ready to get really weird, they could turn to a potential Hall of Fame quarterback to help run the offense for the rest of the year.

With Ryan already in the building, it's possible they pick his brain going ahead.
