Could Giants’ undrafted quarterback steal the backup job?
Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants ‘ organized team activities (OTAs) on Thursday spotlighted a quarterback trio: the incumbent starter Daniel Jones, newcomer Drew Lock, and 2023’s undrafted free agent, Tommy DeVito. While Jones executed several passing drills with his receiving corps, it was Lock and DeVito who took center stage in the more mobile drills, with DeVito particularly distinguishing himself.

Tommy DeVito: Making a Case for the Giants’ QB2 Job

DeVito is squarely in the mix for the QB2 spot, challenging Lock in a competition that could alter the depth chart by the season’s start. Despite initially not being seen as a potential starter, DeVito’s performance last season was unexpectedly solid, leading to multiple wins.

This development, while impressive for DeVito, inadvertently shifted the Giants away from the running for a top-3 draft pick and a possible franchise quarterback, altering the team’s strategic direction.

At 25, DeVito demonstrated his potential last season with 1,101 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and just three interceptions, achieving a 64% completion rate. His performance was notably impacted by external factors, including receivers dropping 12 passes and DeVito himself being sacked 37 times. A significant portion of these sacks were attributed to DeVito holding onto the ball too long, a point of critique in his otherwise commendable season.

Improvements in DeVito’s game could make him a serious contender for more playtime. His arm strength and decisiveness when making quick throws were evident last season. Enhancing his field processing speed and decision-making could solidify his position, possibly filling in for Jones if needed. An additional layer of complexity is Jones’s contract, which includes an injury clause potentially guaranteeing his 2025 salary should he suffer another season-ending injury.

As the Giants continue their OTAs, the quarterback dynamics remain one of the most closely watched storylines, with DeVito’s progress and potential impact on the team’s strategy being of particular interest.
