Now in his fifth season as a member of the Dallas Cowboys, tight end Jake Ferguson is off to a rough start.
Ferguson is a two-time Pro Bowler, and the Cowboys paid him this past offseason on a four-year, $52 million contract extension to make him the highest-paid tight end in franchise history.
He has not made that investment look like a good one so far. Ferguson has just 17 receptions for 115 yards and three touchdowns through eight games. He only has five more yards than his backup Brevyn Spann-Ford.
The problem has also been his poor blocking, as he has been a liability when protecting quarterback Dak Prescott. He has also had ball security issues, fumbling and dropping the ball frequently.
Still, the season is not over for Dallas, and if the Cowboys want to climb out of their 3-5 hole to potentially win the division, Ferguson is going to need to step it up.
Ahead of their Week 9 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts, the Cowboys took to social media to share that Ferguson had been nominated for an award.
“We are excited to announce Jake Ferguson as our 2026 Salute to Service Award nominee presented by USAA,” the team wrote on X. The Cowboys also provided the link for fans to support and vote for Ferguson.

The Salute to Service Award recognizes an NFL player, coach or personnel member who demonstrates an exemplary commitment to honoring and supporting the military community.
Ferguson earned the nomination through a range of work with service members, veterans and their families. He supported the National Medal of Honor Museum, participated in a USAA-hosted visit to NAS JRB Fort Worth and partnered with Black Rifle Coffee Company on a Veterans Day campaign aimed at eliminating veterans’ medical debt.
It is a well-deserved recognition for Ferguson off the field. On it, the Cowboys need him to find that same level of commitment. Dallas has nine games remaining to turn its season around.
