Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson was earmarked for top tight end status prior to the 2024 season beginning, but he never got close.
An interrupted year due to injury and concussion, Ferguson struggled to make much of an impact for Mike McCarthy's offense. Oh, and he lost his quarterback, Dak Prescott, after Week 9, so that wasn't ideal either.
Just 494 yards and no touchdowns, last season is one Ferguson will want to forget in a hurry, and he will need to, entering a contract year, it's put up or shut up time for No. 87.
And for The Athletic, Ferguson has been named Dallas' breakout candidate of 2025 under Brian Schottenheimer.
"Ferguson was an offensive standout at OTAs, where he and Prescott took advantage of the space created by Lamb and Pickens," The Athletic writes. "After an injury-plagued 2024, the contract-year tight end could be better than his Pro Bowl 2023 (71 receptions, 761 yards and five TDs)."
With the addition of George Pickens on the outside and the mere presence of CeeDee Lamb, who can line up anywhere, the underneath routes and the middle of the field will be open for Ferguson and Dak to connect as they often did to devastating effect in 2023.
Now, the injury bug has to stay away, and if it does, Ferguson has all the tools needed to bounce back in a big way. He'll have his quarterback, receivers to shift coverage, and a play-caller who will get him the ball.
The door of opportunity has swung open for Jake; now he's got to walk through it.
