The Dallas Cowboys have now had two preseason games, and both have yielded unfavorable results, with the 31-13 loss to the Baltimore Ravens stinging a little more than it should at this time of year.
The Cowboys were uninspiring on offense with Joe Milton struggling mightily (again, preseason), and the defense initially did well to not give up touchdowns, but the dam wall eventually broke.
It is now two poor preseason performances, with the clubs in the bag still for head coach Brian Schottenheimer an d his coaching staff, but they would have expected better.
“I told the guys, I said, "Hey, the bottom line is this, we're not going to say that that's just a preseason game," Schottenheimer said. "We're not just going to say, oh, we'll be fine. We're going to look at it because we really lost both halves. That is something that we have to get corrected. There's too many good football players, too many good coaches for us to perform the way that we did.”
With just one preseason game left before the Cowboys face the defending Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, Schottenheimer has to get his team turned around quickly.
There simply have to be signs of improvement against the Atlanta Falcons in the third pr eseason game, because if the Cowboys go into Week 1 with three poor performances, they can't expect the switch to be flipped with the starters and to roll into Philadelphia and get the win.
Is it worth having some of the starters play a series against the Falcons? Something needs to be changed to give the Cowboys some level of confidence heading into the regular season or will it be Milton and the backups who get a third bite at the apple?
It feels like it's getting late, early, for Schottenheimer and Dallas.
